Quaternary geology and geological map of the Roteglia Basin within the River Secchia valley (Italy) with evidence for the Canossa-San Romano Fault System and inversion tectonic activity

[EN] This report and accompanying geological map are the culmination of a several year study on the influence of the Canossa-San Romano normal fault system on Quaternary deposition and geomorphology within the Roteglia Basin (northern Italy). Quaternary sedimentary deposits that flank the River Secchia in the study area have led to new interpretations regarding the timing of tectonic activity along the north-eastern margin of the Apennines and have raised questions regarding regional stratigraphic correlation of Quaternary stratigraphic units. A small depositional basin, named during this study as the Roteglia Basin, has been formed where the Canossa-San Romano Fault System crosses the R. Secchia. This fault system is comprised of the Canossa-San Romano primary fault and two subordinate synthetic faults, named the Border and Argontello Faults. Adjacent to the R. Secchia is a set of three strath terraces, dating from 220 to 22 ka, that were cut by the river as the mountain fr...

Influence of the Canossa-San Romano Fault on the Quaternary deposits of the Roteglia Terrace (Northern Apennines, Italy)

[En] The Quaternary deposits overlying a strath terrace along the north-western margin of the River Secchia, near the village of Roteglia (Italy), have recorded a complex history influenced by changing hydrological conditions, following the last glacial maximum, and syndepositional tectonic activity related to the Canossa-San Romano fault system. The primary role of climate control appears to have been the back-stepping of fluvial systems, as glaciers thawed and retreated in the adjacent Apennine chain. However, the more dominant control on local sedimentation patterns was deposition within two actively-developing half-grabens formed by the Argontello and Border faults of the Canossa-San Romano system. These faults created barriers to fluvial transport and possible ponding of the Secchia, changing the depositional setting from a through-flowing braided stream system to a mud-dominated meandering channel with abundant overbank deposition or possibly even lacustrine conditions. The barri...

The Roteglia Basin geometry and its relationship with the Canossa-San Romano regional fault (Northern Apennines, Italy)

[EN] The geomorphological features along the River Secchia near Roteglia have been highly influenced by the Canossa-San Romano regional normal fault. Previous studies show this fault system was active from the Messinian to the mid-Pleistocene, based on normal-fault displacement of the Epiligurian Units and a II-order strath terrace. This article shows that the movement of the Canossa-San Romano fault continued in the Quaternary and might be active today. This new interpretation focuses on the III-order fluvial terrace in the area of Roteglia, which is composed of Quaternary deposits. Understanding the relationship between this III-order terrace and the Canossa-San Romano fault, is important for determining the Roteglia basin geometry and its filling by fluvial sediments transported by the River Secchia. The contact between the Quaternary deposits of the Roteglia Terrace and the underlying Ligurian or Epiligurian Units marks the pre-Quaternary bedrock surface and makes up the Roteglia Ba...

Influence of the Canossa-San Romano fault system on the development of the River Secchia fluvial terraces (Northern Apennines, Italy)

[En] The geomorphological features of a stretch of the River Secchia valley, which is located on the Po Plain side of the Northern Apennines (Italy), are highly influenced by the Canossa-San Romano fault system. Strath terraces covered by thin levels of fluvial and colluvial deposits are found along the banks of the R. Secchia and witness a continued, slow, intermittent tectonic uplift along the northeastern front of the Apennines. Three orders of terraces are present, which were formed through channel scour episodes interspersed with periods of relative quiescence, with channel widening and strath formation. Rates of erosion appear to increase from north to south across a natural threshold, locally known as “Rupe del Pescale” and slow down with decreasing age. A temporal reduction in erosion rates indicates a recent slowdown of the Apennine uplift, which is in disagreement with the interpretation of earlier studies. Evidence for a slowing uplift rate also comes from the Roteglia area,...

Fig. 1 - Stretta del Pescale sul Fiume Secchia. Queste superfic...

The transpressive deformation zone of the Ranzano Formation along the River Secchia near Castellarano (Northern Apennines)

Abstract This article deals with the geological-structural analysis of the rock outcrops along the River Secchia near Castellarano (northern Italy). The outcrops studied belong to the Ranzano Formation (Epiligurian Succession), which in this area represents the lower part of the arenaceous-onglomeratic facies of the Val Pessola Member. From a tectonic viewpoint, the outcrops are located within an area comprised between the Viano syncline to the west and the Montegibbio monocline to the east. The brittle tectonic structures are found along a fault system where the eastern block is lifted compared with the lower western block (Viano syncline). Geological-structural survey of the area allowed the presence of structures, known as deformation bands, to be recognised. They are small millimetre-scale faults present in arenaceous rock types, where fracturing of the grains takes place by shearing. During the survey, structures of different mesofaults were also identifed and grouped together i...
