The Muccia swarm in Central Italy

On 04/04/2018 an earthquake of Mw 4.0 occurred in the Muccia area (Camerino) in central Italy. Hypocentres show a clear distribution, where they show the presence of a detachment by NE-dipping and a master faults by SW-dipping (f). Moreover hypocenters highlight the presence of a dilated wedge (type I), located in the hangingwall of the master fault (f) and a secondary fault (R') antithetical to f. This two faults Dilated wedge is characterized by earthquakes with a extensional focal mechanism. This indicates how the area is subject to SW-NE extension, at a depth of between 7-10 km about. The two conjugate faults, f and R', delimit a wedge (W) with a crustal thickness of 6-7 km about and without a co-seismic deformation inside it. Trace A-A' in map The continuous seismic deformation in the dilated wedge and in outside wedge area, could lead to gravitational collapse of the wedge and generate strong graviquakes along master fault (f). It is not possible ...

The little clusters of Teramo and Muccia and their seimotectonics

Fig. 1 - Teramo cross-section The two figures show the hypocentres of the areas of Teramo and Muccia (central Italy). The hypocentres distribution show the main seismic sources. The Teramo cross-section (fig.1) shows the detachment characterized by NE-dipping surface and the master fault (f) characterized by SW-dipping surface. The main earthquakes with a magnitude of M = 3.0 (14/03/2018) is close to detachment. The cross-section data does not show a "dilated wedge" patterns. fig. 2 - Muccia cross-section The Muccia cross-section (fig. 2) shows the detachment characterized by NE-dipping surface and the master fault (f) characterized by SW-dipping surface. The main earthquakes with a magnitude of M = 3.5 (08/03/2018) is close to master fault. The cross-section data shows an clear "dilated wedge" patterns. This patterns geometry is characteristic of the seismic sequence of central Italy and in other areas such as the 2009 L'Aquila seismic se...

1). Fig. 1 - distribuzione degli epicentri.

Considerations on the seismotectonics and seismogenesis of the Tiberina-Gubbio Valley extensional system (central Italy)

Abstract The analysis of seismological data related to low magnitude earthquakes provides useful information on the seismotectonics and seismogenic context as well as on the seismic processes that generate seismic sequences with strong earthquakes. We analysed seismic data, related to the 1984 earthquake sequence and the 2010-2015 seismicity, and we obtained information about the history of seismic events and the associated tectonic structure activity, which allowed us to describe the seismotectonics model and seismogenic area. The geometry of the Tiberina Valley fault system that represents a detached surface of regional relevance is subject to a creep deformation along the deeper segments, which determines the evolution of the seismicity of the area. Brittle deformations with the possibility of microseismic as well as strong events are plausible in the most superficial segments. The Gubbio fault is antithetical to the preceding one, showing brittle deformation features with the p...
