The 2012 Emilia earthquake stress transfer from the MW 5.8 seismogenic source of May 20th to the MW 5.6 seismic event of May 29th (northern Italy)

Abstract The 2012 Emilia seismic sequence was characterised by two main compressional events, which occurred on May 20th and 29th, 2012, with MW 5.8 and MW 5.6, respectively. Seismic activity was ascribed to the northward verging fold and thrust structures in the Ferrara-Romagna arc. This study shows how the stress change of May 20th earthquake could have interacted with the adjacent faults. The study highlights a large lobe of increased Coulomb stress change at the root of the external Ferrara thrust and at the top of the Carpi-Poggio Renatico thrust. The transfer model shows a 1-2 bar increase along some fault segments of the external Ferrara thrust, an increase less than 1 bar along other fault segments and a decrease along a segment of the Carpi-Poggio Renatico thrust. The Coulomb stress change (shear and normal component) and transfer model does not show either increase or decrease along the Mirandola thrust (another segment of the Carpi-Poggio Renatico thrust).
